TRUTH MATTERS Part 1: As long as no one gets hurt

KEY POINT:

Today we live in a very relativistic society so that it seems that the truth doesn’t really matter. The truth is relativeas they say.  One way people express this is in the notion that people should be free to do what they want, when they want and with whom they want… as long as no one gets hurt.  Is truth simply personal?

OPEN:

RELATIVISM: The assumption that there is no such thing as absolute truth.  We feel that we could bend the truth to suit our needs.  (Our age, our height or weight)

How have you experienced relativism in your daily life?

  1. Among non-believers
  2. Among believers

CONNECT:

  1. Read John 18:37-38. Compare Jesus’ truth claim with that of Pontius Pilate.  How are they different? (Refer to John 14:6)
  2. Read Judges 21:25. In what ways do people then and now do things that are right in “their own eyes”.  How do people measure what is good or evil? Acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Compare cultural differences with moral differences.  How do you draw the line.
  3. In 2 Timothy 4:3-4, the apostle Paul points out that many believers like to listen to teachers who “suit their passions”. What influences in society are people influenced by and why?
  4. Does no one really get hurt when we make choices based on self-desires?   Read Romans 6:16-18.  When you say “yes” to a compromise that seems innocuous at that time, you eventually regret it.  Share some experiences you have had of things said or done that was “harmless” at first, but ended up in regret.

TAKE IT HOME:

  1. Give each other time to share some things in their lives they feel they need to protect better from compromise.
  2. Close by praying for each other.
